The slow and inhumane killing of George Floyd, coupled with the frustration of lockdown and mass unemployment, have created the conditions necessary for mass protest and now more than ever, demanding change. As Black Lives Matter protesters remain loud and consistent in the streets of America, the artists who’ve always spoken truth to power are doing so once again, giving the fight to stay on course.
A significant contribution to efforts to seek justice has come from the music community. #TheShowMustBePaused initiative was launched by US music industry executives Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang, and sought to get their peers to reflect on the ways they can “protect and empower the black communities that have made them disproportionately wealthy in ways that are measurable and transparent” – their call for a social media “blackout” quickly became a global trend.
Butter Beats, one of Meek Mill’s go-to solid producers, who has made some real deep meaningful tracks such as Oodles O’ Noodles Babies and Blue Notes hit us with, ( DJ Khaled Voice ) Another one… Otherside Of America even though released to the public about a month ago, had been written back in 2019 with plans to have Nipsey Hussle and St. John on the original record.
“I could only imagine what the legendary Nip would’ve done to this song. Long live the great Nip.” Butter Beats continues, “The beat has a Netherlands and New York vibe to it. When adding that hungry Meek Mill pain, aggressive Philly flow, it was the icing on the cake.”
“Reportin’ live from the other side / Same corner where my brothers died / Livin’ life, we ain’t got a care / Told my mama I ain’t dyin’ here (No) / .40 on me, I ain’t buyin’ beer (No)/ Ain’t have a will, now I’m flyin’ Lear / Bunch of felons on the jet with me / Make a movie like it’s Con Air.”
“Creating this beat, I just knew Meek’s flow would sound dope on it. My Boy Shroom sent me a pack of samples and this one in particular, Sample 8, stood out.” Butter is no stranger to making hits with Meek and deffinitly knows exactly how to get the Philly legend in his feelings, hitting chords that bring him back to his struggles. “I cooked it the same day I got the pack and sent it out ASAP. When I heard the song, I was amazed on what Meek did to it. He killed it.” Says Butter.
I’ve had the pleasure of being friends with Butter Beats for some time now and watching him grow into a one of the dopest producers has been a complete honor. When Butter makes his masterpieces, not only are they all skillfully crafted, but each one tells a story of some sort. Instrumentals are the base of a hit record, the good ones make you feel emotions you haven’t felt in awhile and thats exactly what Butter cooks up each time. Musical symphonies, where each string tugs on the memories that are buried in your heart that gets brought back up to the surface.
“It was a perfect time to drop this record. Meek Mill is way ahead of his time. Salute to Meek Mill and the whole Dream Chaser team for the opportunity.” Says Butter. And thank you Butter Beats for continuously suppling the culture with legendary beats that turn into hit records that our children’s children will be able to hear and still feel what we are all feeling in todays society.
