Ciara is back and fiercer than ever. Revealing the music video for “Rooted,” a powerful, Ester Dean-accompanied protest song celebrating Black excellence and pride, she has shown us just how ethereal women are.
In the visual, directed by Annie Bercy, clips of Ciara singing and dancing are followed by shots of natural hair, footage of Black youth dancing, and moments from protests. The song carries a uniquely powerful impact given the current socio-political climate, as demonstrations against police violence and systemic racism continue to uproot the country. Visuals from the Black Lives Matter protests honoring Breonna Taylor and George Floyd are also weaved into the music video, serving as a necessary reminder to everyone that the fight for justice is not over, rather it has simply begun.
Ciara then ends the visual with a short yet commanding statement that reads, “To all my young Rosa’s and young Luther’s, keep marching. Don’t stop fighting for what you believe in. To all my Black queens and kings, continue to plant and spread seeds of love, hope and pride in your tribe. Everything you need to survive and thrive is rooted in you. Stay rooted.”
