Few card games, let alone games in general, have had the lifespan that Uno has had over the past few decades. Centered around Born in the 1970’s in Cincinnati as a way for families to bond and spend time together, the game is now a worldwide phenomenon that is just played more now than it ever has been. Like other toys however, Mattel thought it was time to bring this one to life: Uno, the classic card game, will begin production for adaptations for a film. Not just any film however; this film will be set as a “hip-hop” heist sett in Atlanta, with a big name already attached.
Four decades later, the popularIty of UNO has nor waned one bit but grown if anything.TFP recently reported that a film about the children’s toy Slinky was also in production, so a movie about something much more interactive is of no huge surprise. The concept however is starkly different: the Slinky film is set to tell the history of the iconic toy, while the UNO film is set to be a hip-hop heist set in Atlanta. Mattel has enlisted a good figurehead for the film however with hip-hop star and Atlanta’s own Lil Yachty. Quality films, a subsidiary of Yachty’s label Quality Control, who will work alongside executive producer Max Brenner to produce the upcoming film. Brenner was very optimistic about Mattel and the direction it is going in, in an interview with Deadline: “At Mattel Films, we are looking to explore stories that bring our brands to life in unexpected ways,” … Uno is a game that transcends generations and cultures,”
Uno is not the only toy film that Mattel is currently pursuing, with films about the Barbie toys in production as well. In essence, Mattel is attempting to expand their brand by bringing the toys that made them famous to life and bring them to Hollywood, and their efforts are intriguing to say the least. Enlisting A-List talent like Lil Yachty definitely helps their efforts, but ultimately it is on Mattel to deliver. With the film just being announced this week, details are sparse and a release date is unknown, but fans can be on the lookout for a Lil Yachty Uno film in the coming future.
