Since their inception, superhero films have been a genre dominated primarily by the male stars who elected to undertake these roles. That has certainly changed substantially in recent decades, with the rise of numerous female superheroes that were just as, if not more than, successful as their male counterparts. Most recently we have seen the likes of Gal Gadot and Brie Larson enlisted to help continue to pave the way for female superheroes, with their respective Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel movies seeing immense box office success in the last few years. Now we know who is set to join them next: DC Comics is currently producing the next superhero blockbuster in the form of a Batgirl movie, and a plethora of new information has just emerged about the project that will help fans bide their time in anticipation.
A spinoff of the iconic Batman franchise, DC’s upcoming Batgirl film has been discussed endlessly over the past few months as anticipation builds. We know that Leslie Grace is set to star in the titular role with Brendan Fraser set to play the villain Firefly that some fans may already be familiar with, however DC isn’t done there. This week they announced that Ivory Aquino is set to join the project’s cast next, making her the first transgender character to appear in a live-action DC film and highlighting the genre’s willingness to break barriers. Now we have the first official piece of material from the project in the form of a tweet, reposted below, that showcases Grace dangling somebody out of a window during filming, a sight that is sure to excite eager fans who are counting down the days until Batgirl premieres. While we don’t know exactly how many days that will be with no releas date officially announced yet, fans can remain on the lookout for further updates about DC Comics’ budding new Batgirl film in the coming weeks.
The Batman franchise is one of the most iconic superhero franchises to this day, having a long history that dates to the 1930’s. We have seen a multitude of adaptations and retellings of his story at this point, but it looks like DC wanted to put a twist on things this time. It looks like they are moving in the right direction, with anticipation for Batgirl rising with each and every update.
