October has come and gone now, and hopefully everybody had plenty of time to watch their favorite classic halloween films. Whether that be a classic like Nightmare on Elm Street or a more lighthearted film like Disney’s Halloweentown, there is still something for everybody during the spookiest season of the year and October was everyone’s opportunity to enjoy these timeless films to the fullest extent. With that being said however, it doesn’t have to be during the Halloween season that you indulge in these projects and some will enjoy them all year round regardless of what the social norms may be. Those individuals are in for a treat in fact as it has just been announced that filming for Hocus Pocus 2, the sequel to the classic Disney film, has begun filming this past week.
Originally released in 1993, Hocus Pocus tells the story of three evil witches who kidnap young children in an attempt to drain them of their youth before subsequently killing them and a group of children in Salem, Massachusetts who are forced to contend with them. The film is considered to be a classic by many, an integral piece of Disney’s run of films and television series throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s that helped them cement their place in entertainment today. Now they are attempting to reboot the franchise and have begun filming on Hocus Pocus 2 this past week, with Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy in Rhode Island to shoot the upcoming project. The sequel is set to pick up 29 years after the events of the original film and will see the same three witches wreaking havoc upon Salem once again, now aiming for revenge after having their plans foiled once already. The teens they are wreaking havoc upon this time will be played by Whitney Peak, Lilia Buckingham and Belissa Escobedo and will premiere on Disney+ in the fall of 2022.
Disney’s intellectual property is the gift that just keeps on giving, with this new project serving as a prime example of that. Even after nearly three decades dormant, they can revive a film and bring it back to the audiences who enjoyed it in the first place along with a whole new one and subsequently capitalize like never before. It should be interesting to see what comes of it, and avid Disney fans can remain on the lookout for further updates about Hocus Pocus 2 in the near future.
