Just last night, on Monday, October 19th, Doja Cat released a groundbreaking, (quite literally) out of this world new collab with Bebe Rexha on their guest appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show. Their song was called “Baby, I’m Jealous”. The two made an eclectic music video to go beyond accompanying, but rather amplify this exciting new song that is sure to go viral soon, if it hasn’t already.
The music video is set in what is almost an extraterrestrial jungle. Yes, that’s what I meant. The women’s neon costumes glow in the dark amidst a black “rainforest” with multicolored lights all over that establish the trippy scenery. They went so far as to even add fake greenery, around which the two women and backup dancers danced around in neon orange, green, and pink. The colorful women popped out, but the song was more centered around R&B, although there was clearly well crafted fusion of pop and rap in the mix.
Although the song and the video were passionate and fun, the two time Grammy Award nominee (Bebe Rexha) and the two time BET award nominee and MTV Video Music PUSH New Artist winner (Doja Cat) had a more important message. Both women agreed that the song was about self empowerment and self love, as they sing about initially being jealous of others but then embracing their lives and insecurities. They discuss the relatability of this message, as they themselves have seen others’ social media highlights and pictures of other women’s figures and have experienced that jealousy which they learned to overcome with positivity and confidence. When thought about more deeply, this embracement of quirks and insecurities is very well symbolized in the video by these neon costumes, as the women’s faces and bodies are visible and real as they glow and they shine in the middle of a darker background of negative emotions. This is a beautiful and unique form of artistry, and the song itself is great to listen to. The video and the song itself are out and available on all platforms! The Tonight Show never disappoints, and we hope to see more collabs with these two women soon!
