In light of our new self-isolating era, Drake finally gives us an inside look at his tastefully over-the-top mansion in his first music video to emerge since the rise of our global pandemic.
“Toosie Slide”, which was leaked prior to its official release on Thursday at midnight, has already become a viral hit as fan recorded dance video’s have taken over TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. However, its contagious choreography, and memorable lyrics are no coincidence. According to a recent interview, the song was made with TikTok in mind. The dancers and musicians Toosie, Hiii Key, and Ayo & Teo are the source of the Toosie Slide: “Drake hit me up and was like, ‘Yo, I need your help,’” Toosie shared. “So he sends the record. It was just an idea at the time. It was just the hook and a verse. I came up with this dance. [Drake said,] ‘What you think? You think you can come up with a dance for this song that I made?’” The four of them were together and “came up with it pretty fast.”
The official visual opens with a shot of Toronto’s eerily empty streets; an instant reminder of the current condition of the world, and how empty and lifeless it looks without us. Then, Drake appears in his grandiose home—full of gleaming marble surfaces, high-end art, Grammy’s. awards, and an indoor pool—wearing gloves and a mask while doing the song’s signature dance. By the song’s end Drake is dancing on his rooftop in front of a fireworks display.
Since the end of the MTV-Cribs era, I find it safe to say that we have never seen more in depth looks at celebrity dwellings than in recent weeks, and that more homey content is on the way. As we’ve all settled into the concept of staying home, creativity has reached an all time-high and there have been coronavirus raps, Instagram Live producer battles and DJ sets, virtual concerts, and a rise in rappers recording feature verses. Therefore Drake, in ode of his winning streak, wasted no time in taking advantage of our undivided attention with “Toosie Slide” and the Toosie Slide. Both the song and dance are most definitely here to stay as the music video is currently the number one trending video on YouTube.
