HBO is notorious for the array of original and captivating television series and films they produce, ranging from the classic mafia series The Sopranos to the medieval fantasy world of Game of Thrones. They invest heavily into these projects to ensure they are delivering content of the highest quality, and their investment pays off virtually every single time. Some of these projects end up inspiring other works of television and film like The Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark releasing this October; this time things will be a little different however. HBO’s next project is inspired by the upcoming remake of the 1984 cult classic film Dune, and a new Dune series is currently in the works over at HBO Max.
Inspired by the David Lynch film Dune that was released back in the 80’s, the reboot of the same name directed by Denis Villeneuve is currently slated to release in a few months on October 22nd. Eager fans were treated to a new trailer for the project this week that certainly helped build hype for the film, and now it looks like Dune fans have something else to be excited for. The new series Dune: The Sisterhood is currently in production at HBO Max and will act as a prequel to both the 1984 original and this year’s remake. As the title may indicate, the series will follow the story of a group of women who are forced to navigate through the sociopolitical tensions embedded in the plot of Dune and ultimately set the stage for the events in the film. No one has been cast to appear in the series yet, however HBO has enlisted Diane Ademu-John as its showrunner, writer and executive producer.
Nowadays, virtually any successful series or film is subject to spin-off projects that further develop the universe that their predecessors captured so perfectly. In some instances those projects may dilute what made the original special, in others it amplifies that essence instead. The problem with that however is that it is virtually impossible to predict, leading to a lot of trial and error to find the needle in the haystack. Few spin-offs happen nearly 40 years after the original debuted, making Dune: The Sisterhood stand out especially. Fans can keep counting down the days until the Dune reboot hits theaters and HBO Max in October, and now they can also remain on the lookout for further updates about Dune: The Sisterhood.
