Two weeks after the Memorial Day weekend release of Cruella, Disney announced that the sequel was on the way. A spokesperson from Disney released a statement regarding the positive ratings and feedback received from the film. At that time it was also confirmed that director Craig Gillespie and scribe Tony McNamara would be returning. Now months later, it’s been reported that Emma Stone is also onboard to return as the trouble making star of the film, Cruella.
The film earned more than $85 million domestically and $220 million in global box office upon release. Disney’s spokesperson had this to say about the film, “We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date.” There has been much speculation that Stone would possibly join forces with Black Widow‘s Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney. It looks like Stone is pleased with her contract with Disney and is ready to partner up again.
Patrick Whitesell, Executive of Stone’s agency had this to say about the Cruella 2 deal.
“While the media landscape has been disrupted in a meaningful way for all distributors, their creative partners cannot be left on the sidelines to carry a disproportionate amount of the downside without the potential for upside. This agreement demonstrates that there can be an equitable path forward that protects artists and aligns studios’ interests with talent. We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner. We are hopeful that this will open the door for more members of the creative community to participate in the success of new platforms.”
Whitesell’s statement is only further proof that Johansson’s lawsuit is possibly a standalone issue. I’m sure Disney will figure out a way to work together to form better partnerships in the future. There is no word on when the sequel will start production or any other information. While we wait for more Disney Magic, be sure to continue streaming Cruella!
