Over the course of a decade, Disney released countless films through the Marvel imprint that ultimately comprised the Avengers franchise. Among those films are the two Guardians of the Galaxy films released in 2014 and 2017 which have been a huge hit amongst fans. While fans have been patiently enduring an even longer hiatus for the third film than they did for the second, leaving many to speculate about how the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy will finish off. Director James Gunn has additionally begun storyboarding the film, with more details slowly beginning to emerge about the upcoming project. Among those speculations and details include who may die at the end of the upcoming third film, and those speculations are only catalyzed by comments from the director himself.
While many wouldn’t have expected Guardians of the Galaxy to become the fan favorite it has, it is easily amongst the most successful of the multitude of Marvel franchises. Thus it is no surprise that fervent fans are eager with anticipation for the upcoming third film and can’t help but speculate about what might be included in it. Some speculation on social media has regarded who may die at the end of the third film, referencing an old comment Gunn had made previously that a death would take place in the franchise’s third installment, with the film’s star Chris Pratt trending on Twitter as a result. Others have speculated that it will be a character other than Pratt’s Star-Lord such as Rocket or Dave Bautista’s character Drax, however it is impossible to tell with a director like Gunn at the helm. Fans will just have to remain patient and await the film’s expected release in 2023.
While the end of a franchise is never easy for dedicated fans, all good things must come to an end and it is safe to assume that Gunn and company will do it justice. If that ending evokes a few tears in the process then we will just have to wait and see how fans feel about it. Bautista recently commented that the ending is certainly “bittersweet” after having worked on the franchise for nearly a decade, and fans are bound to feel the same regardless of how it may end. We will just have to remain patient in anticipation of Guardians of the Galaxy 3′s expected release in 2023.
