Despite how much there is to deal with in the here and now, humans are constantly looking towards the future and wondering what is next. With technological advancements constantly reshaping our day to day lives, it is virtually impossible to not wonder what society’s greatest minds are on the verge of and what they could possibly come up with in the future. Hollywood has explored the topic in great detail, with the Blade Runner franchise being one of the movie industry’s most iconic creations to date. While the original film was released in 1982 and the future that it imagined did not materialize, the project has achieved cult-classic status and remains a valuable piece of intellectual property almost forty years later. So valuable that it is even inspiring new projects currently in production, such as the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus which we just received the first official trailer of.
Directed by Ridley Scott, the 1982 film starring Harrison Ford as Officer Rick Deckard of the LAPD imagined a world infected with non-human creatures challenging our ways of life. While 2019, the year the film was set in, came and went with relative ease, Blade Runner has continued to receive praise despite its, albeit fictional, inconsistencies. So much so that a reboot was released in 2017 titled Blade Runner 2049 that was directed by Denis Villeneuve, also director of the upcoming Dune remake, that did much better commercially than its predecessor. Now a new project is on the way, and this time it’s an anime series titled Blade Runner: Black Lotus that will once again revisit society after it has been infected by these creatures and humanity is forced to fight back. The series’ first thirteen episodes will debut on Adult Swim later this fall.
Though the events in the film never came to fruition, Blade Runner is still a timeless Hollywood classic that remains relevant today. The curiosity about the future inherent in the film’s plot is very much alive today and will continue to persist for many years to come, likely inspiring countless new projects in the process. It could also mean more Blade Runner projects as well, especially if Blade Runner: Black Lotus is received well by audiences. Fans will just have to stay patient and await further updates about the new anime series over the next few weeks.
