Greta Gerwig, an esteemed Oscar-nominated filmmaker, will be directing Mattel Doll-based flick Barbie. Suicide Squad’s Margot Robbie is said to be starring in the movie. Initially, Gerwig was going to co-write the movie’s script with Noah Baumbach. But, as fate may have it, she’s going to be putting on her director hat. This great news was released during Robbie’s interview with British Vogue. This announcement was then confirmed through other sources and Variety.
In part of her sit-down, Robbie says
“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like,’ Oh, well, maybe I don’t…'”
The production for Barbie will begin in early 2022 at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios in London. The trailer will drop in 2023. There are no details on the plot. However, Robbie deems it as “a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids.”
Gerwig is mainly known for her work in Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women, which scored 11 Oscar nominations and one win, including a nod for Best Director.
