Insecure’s co-creator, Issa Rae revealed the reboot of Project Greenlight in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. Rae confirmed that the 8-episode series is coming back to HBO Max and will be produced by her company Hoorae Media, along with Miramax Television. The series, described as a film-making competition/docuseries last aired in 2015 and was canceled in 2016. The previous series followed upcoming filmmakers around depicting the ups and downs of filmmaking. The group is then given the chance to direct their first feature film, in this reboot however, the group is all female.
In the upcoming series, Rae will be featured in all episodes as the executive producer and mentor to a group of female filmmakers. The winner of the competition will have their finished film debuted on HBO Max. The series was first created by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and producer Chris Moore. Jennifer O’Connell, Executive VP of nonfiction and live-action family at HBO Max said,
“At HBO Max, we are committed to providing a platform for diverse, up-and-coming talent. Issa is uniquely skilled in this space, and we are thrilled to be partnering with her and Miramax as a promising group of filmmakers is inspired and challenged with their biggest opportunity yet.”
When speaking about the reboot Rae said “I want this version of the show to make filmmaking feel attainable.” Who better to make filmmaking feel attainable then Rae? Rae brings her unique experience and skills as a creator, actor and producer to this series reboot. When describing Rae’s character as a leader, Yvonne Orji, Rae’s costar in Insecure states,
“Issa had to believe that we could do it, and she trusted her baby with us.… I wish that more people in power could have the same attitude. She literally puts people in positions and allows them to do their jobs. She lets people grow.”
It seems that Rae would be the perfect match to mentor and help grow the careers of these upcoming filmmakers. The official release date of Project Greenlight has yet to be announced, but it is coming along with other project’s from Rae’s company Hoorae media. Be on the lookout!
