At this point, there are so many different superhero projects it’s beginning to get difficult to keep track of them. This renaissance was kicked off by Marvel when they rebooted the Iron Man franchise in 2008, leading to the entire Avengers franchise being revived in response. Now DC Comics is bringing back the beloved superheroes they are known for, such as the Wonder Woman franchise that has been rebooted starring Gal Gadot to massive success. Now they have a new project in the pipeline from DC with another female superhero at the center in the upcoming film Black Canary.
Based upon a comic book series by the same name, Black Canary tells the story of a heroine who is a mother by day and superhero by night with a piercing scream that debilitates her foes and is the basis of her name. The character was actually already introduced in the 2020 film Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn as the two fight alongside one another, being played by the actress Jurnee Smollett. The actress has already been enlisted to reprise her role for the upcoming solo film, teaming up with Misha Green to develop the project. The duo first worked together on the 2016 series Underground and most recently collaborated on the HBO series Lovecraft Country which received 18 Emmy nominations, including Smollett’s nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Black Canary is also set to be distributed by HBO, coming straight to HBO Max when it is ultimately released.
Smollett and Green have had their names attached to this project for some time now. In an interview last year, the pair teased the idea of a solo film and expressed great interest in making it happen. Now they are finally getting their opportunity and will hopefully rekindle the magic they have created together in the past. Very little is known about the project thus far, but remain on the lookout for further updates about the upcoming Black Canary solo film.
