Few films made as much noise as Knives Out did when it was released just before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Bolstered by a star-studded cast anchored by the likes of Ana de Armas and Chris Evans, the project was an immediate hit among fans who quickly became wrapped up in the film’s many layers that made the murder mystery all the more captivating. As a result, the film earned a staggering 97% on Rotten Tomatoes while going on to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 92nd Academy Awards as well as the British Academy Film Awards. Now a sequel is in the works after Netflix paid $450 million for the rights to the imminent project, and it looks like Knives Out 2 is closer than some fans might have expected.
Seemingly inspired by the classic board game Clue, the “whodunit” story at the heart of Knives Out immediately resonated with fans. The quirky humor coupled with the gripping plotline as viewers follow Detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, as he works to uncover the truth behind who murdered a wealthy socialite. Now fans will get the chance to see Blanc at work again with Knives Out 2 currently in production over at Netflix, and it looks like they may get the film sooner than expected. Though COVID-19 delays hampered the film’s production, more details are beginning to emerge about the project that give fans a glimpse as to what’s to come. Among those details include fresh faces that will join Craig for the sequel, including some very well-respected names including Edward Norton, Ethan Hawke, Leslie Odom Jr., and many more that are sure to excite fans and make Knives Out 2 as special as the first.
The budding franchise’s director Rian Johnson is certainly no newcomer even though his name may be unfamiliar to most. The filmmaker broke into Hollywood in 2005 with the film Brick, and has gone on to direct some impressive projects such as 2012’s Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Johnson has actually come out and said that this is a project he has had in the back of his mind for quite a while now, he simply did not have the time to make it a reality. Now that he has found the time though, he has what could be a very successful franchise on his hands; eager fans will have to await the release of Knives Out 2 to find out for themselves.
