As some Joker fans may know, the iconic Lady Gaga will be stepping into her role as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. Her voice transformation to embody this famous character has already sparked anticipation and interest in the movie.
In an interview with Empire, Joaquin Phoenix, who stars in Todd Phillips‘ musical film, shared his thoughts on working alongside Lady Gaga, stating, “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before.” His admiration for her work is palpable, leaving us all intrigued about their on-screen chemistry.
Meanwhile, Gaga stated, “People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as a, but this movie is different; I’m playing a character.” She emphasized her effort in singing, explaining, “I worked hard to ensure my vocals came from Lee, not from me as a performer.”
Gaga understands the challenges of taking on this role and demonstrates her dedication and gratitude by treating the project with care and patience, knowing that the film will be adapted for the stage.
Gaga commented, “How do you make music an extension of the dialogue rather than breaking into song without a clear reason?” She discussed her experience, saying, “It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before.”
As she reflects on this beautiful experience, the pop icon reveals the significant impact that being a singer has had on her.
“Honestly, I hit plenty of bum notes as Lee,” she told Empire Magazine with a laugh about her singing voice in the film. “I’m a trained singer, right? So, my breathing was different when I sang as Lee. On stage, I have a very controlled way of breathing to ensure I stay on pitch and maintain the right rhythm and timing, but Lee wouldn’t know how to do any of that. It’s about stripping away the technical aspects and disconnecting my perceived artistry to embody who she is fully.”
Joker: Folie à Deux features heart-wrenching performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Phoenix, who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the Joker in the first film, returns to his role. Phoenix is joined by the talented singer Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn. Known for her versatility and powerhouse performances, Gaga brings a unique blend of vulnerability and power to the character.
