The iconic “Paper Planes” queen is back! M.I.A. released a new song today titled, “OHMNI20209” via Patreon.
It seems the rapper/songwriter has not lost touch with the eclectic and daringly bold sound we all love. Today marks the 15th anniversary of her debut album Arular, and the classic M.I.A. energy we witnessed in 2005 is almost palpable as soon as the new single begins.
Recently, M.I.A. launched a Patreon account, a membership platform where fans pay their favorite creators a monthly subscription in exchange for exclusive access, extra content, or a closer look into their creative journey. Access to rappers account is priced at $5 or $10 a month. Here, she promises to deliver “short films, clips and video diaries unreleased footage from her MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A documentary, livestreams, Q&As and new music, which she did on Sunday.
While many may be confused as to why she chose this platform rather than our most popular streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud, M.I.A. explains that, ““I’m doing a Patreon, because I make so much stuff and record so many things that aren’t music and don’t fit on other platforms,” but this does not mean that she is abandoning our traditional music scene. She further expresses that, ““I’m still making music, putting out the 6th album which is nearly finished, on a normal label, same as the others.”
“OHMNI20209,” is currently available for free via her Patreon. In a tweet, she introduced the song by calling it “free music to get you the f**k up outta bed.”
