Madlib is a multi-producer who earned respect from both the underground and mainstream scenes. Since the 2000s, Madlib has curated beats for artists like Kanye West, MF Doom, De La Soul, Mos Def, and, recently, Freddie Gibbs. AllMusic states, “The unique sound and feel of Madlib’s work — created primarily without computers, using old-school recording and sampling gear — has made him a valued collaborator.”
His discography includes the Lootpack‘s Soundpieces: Da Antidote!, Quasimoto‘s The Unseen, Jaylib‘s Champion Sound, and Madvillain‘s Madvillainy. He’s also collaborated with Gibbs on Bandana and Piñata.
Last year, Madlib had bestowed Complex‘s Best Hip-Hop Producer Alive in 2019. During an interview, Madlib sat down with the hip-hop magazine to speak about the making of Bandana, his relationship with Freddie Gibbs, future collaborations with Pusha-T and Griselda, Kanye West studio sessions, and more.
“I’m trying to do that album with Pusha-T,” Madlib stated, “I’m also working with the Griselda crew. All three of them are really dope. They’re bringing back that real New York sh*t.”
