Netflix for the win! It was announced on Monday that the streaming service would be partnering with Amblin Partners in a multi-year deal. Amblin Partners is a film and television production company led by the one and only Steven Spielberg. This might be the one up that Netflix needs to out-beat the rising competition.
Based on many reports the deal comes as a surprise. Spielberg left many under the impression that he was against streaming services. According to a report by Yahoo!, the award winning film director was apart of a coalition of Academy members who tried to convince a board to ban steaming films from being nominated for the Academy Awards. However, it seems that Spielberg is now singing another tune. As the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them.
Spielberg released a statement through Amblin on Monday:
“At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, and from the minute Ted and I started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways. This new avenue for our films, alongside the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners, will be incredibly fulfilling for me personally since we get to embark on it together with Ted, and I can’t wait to get started with him, Scott, and the entire Netflix team.”
Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer also released a statement about the partnership stating, “Storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, when he started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways.” Kudos to Netflix for inking this amazing deal that will bring new amazing stories to their streaming platform.
