Since the onset of the COVID pandemic, humans around the globe have seen substantial disruptions in their day to day lives. Limited public dining, no live entertainment, mandatory social distancing – the things most humans love to do most in their free time they have become deprived of. As a result, they have been spending much more time at home consuming content since they cannot do so in public, much to the satisfaction of streaming giants such as Netflix. Netflix even came out recently and promised to release a new movie every week while highlighting a star-studded lineup that is sure to leave viewers appeased. They are not done there however as they continue to produce new original series that possess the potential to bring an even greater amount of attention to the platform as these series go viral on a regular basis; take Tiger King for example. Now Netflix has given us the trailer for Tribes of Europa, a new sci-fi series about a dystopian society, and it looks like they have another hit on their hands.
A series about a dystopian society is something that can resonate with everybody at the current point in time given everything going on. A global health pandemic, political unrest unlike anything we have ever witnessed, a division in society regarding these topics – some have likened the current state of affairs to an episode of another Netflix hit series, Black Mirror. This brings us to the new trailer for Tribes of Europa Netflix has graced us with, set in 2074 following a period of darkness upon which society is forced to rebuild itself. The Hunger Games-esque trailer highlights a struggle for power as different parties fight for control over this newfound society, however the intrinsic message behind the aries is much more positive. This was highlighted by the show’s creator Phillip Koch in an interview with Collider: “We are not moving in a radioactively contaminated post-apocalypse where doom lurks behind every corner. Rather, we are living in an exciting world where everybody gets back on their feet. A new beginning for the continent, full of hope…” Though Tribes of Europa may appear bleak on the surface, Koch’s perspective is much more hopeful and a perspective society as a whole could learn from as we continue to work towards a cure for COVID and return to normalcy.
Netflix has been on a tear since the pandemic began. Making their first splash with the Joe Exotic inspired Tiger King series up to more recent efforts such as The Queen’s Gambit and Bridgerton, 2020 may not have been a great year for society but it sure was for Netflix. It looks like they’re hoping for a repeat in 2021 as COVID cases have spiked dramatically as the year began and stay-at-home orders were amplified, leaving Netflix viewers with more time on their hands to spend on the platform. Not only did Netflix promise these viewers a new movie every week, with the likes of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Halle Berry set to make their directorial debuts, but they are continuing to churn out original new series as well for fans to binge in between film releases. Fans can look forward to the first season of Tribes of Europa to hit Netflix in a few short weeks.
