Over the past few decades, few genres of film have transformed to as great of a degree as the horror genre has. Best known for classic 80’s franchises such as A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th which helped define it, horror films have certainly come to look much different than they did then. They have become increasingly inventive and unique with filmmakers taking full advantage of the advancements in technology that have taken place in recent decades, providing them significantly more creative liberty in the process. The genre as a whole has benefitted as a result, as well as moviegoers who have been treated to a wide array of horror projects in the past few decades that have been key contributors to the genre’s reshaping. One current franchise has explored the topic of post-apocalyptic life following an alien invasion that virtually decimates all of humanity for instance and has generated considerable buzz in the process with its first two films, and now Paramount has announced plans for a third installment in A Quiet Place: Part 3.
Backed by an incredibly talented cast and crew, if you’re a movie watcher then you’ve almost definitely heard of the A Quiet Place franchise. With the first film releasing in 2018 starring John Krasinski, who also directed both films, and Emily Blunt, its plot centers around the Abbott family who are among the few lucky survivors of an invasion of the planet by aliens who are blind yet possess an acute sense of hearing that makes their inability to see virtually meaningless and their ability to kill even greater. As you might have already guessed however, they aren’t really all that lucky as living in this post-apocalyptic world is both stressful and dangerous and subsequently alter their way of life dramatically to adapt. The sequel A Quiet Place: Part II released two years later in 2020 and was essentially equally as successful, with both films combining to generate $650 million in box office receipts globally despite costing Paramount about $75 million to produce. As a result Paramount has officially announced plans to produce a third installment and officially giving A Quiet Place: Part III the green light to begin production. Details remain sparse however, and eager fans may want to hold off before they get too excited just yet because the film isn’t expected to hit theaters until 2025.
While there have been a multitude of highly successful horror franchises in the past decade or two, few have been quite as successful as A Quiet Place. Though the alien invasion plotline is nothing new to Hollywood, the unique twist and creative storytelling have allowed the franchise to transcend well beyond what anybody could have originally anticipated when the first film originally released a few years ago. Now the franchise is on pace to generate nearly $1 billion across box offices around the world after the third installment is eventually released; whether it breaks that mark or not though, A Quiet Place: Part III should seemingly be worth the wait.
