For decades Newark, also known as Brick City, has birthed some of the greatest names in music, entertainment and art. This city has continued that legacy since the introduction of Sarah Vaughn, Queen Latifah, Faith Evans, and many other grand talents. Up until this very day we continue to enjoy and promote music from a plethora of rising artists who are brimming with talent, work ethic, and unbridled creativity.
We recently discovered a rising star at DJ Jayhood’s Fundraising Birthday Bash at Bentley’s Restaurant in Newark, New Jersey. This event was put together in an effort to raise funds towards building a music production school for the youth of Newark. Our Editor in Chief Amber Le was greatly impressed by a young artist who goes by the name of Global Jay. His stage presence, contemporary sound, and authentic character truly filled the room, and becomes almost tangible through his music.
In a recent interview with Le we got to know the soon to be hip hop sensation. Born and raised in the central ward of the great Brick City Jay discovered his passion for rapping at the age of 14. He recounts how the painful loss of his best friend motivated him to pursue music full time. He shared that, “I started making music after my friend Kylin had passed away, he had always told me to rap serious in my 7th grade year but I was getting laughed at so I didn’t have enough confidence. When he passed away, my 8th grade year I felt lost, and I felt bad for his twin and the rest of his family. I had to doing something, I couldn’t just be a nobody with all this pain.” From that point forward he pursued music relentlessly.
Now, aside from performing at star studded venues, the Newark native has released a vast catalogue of records for us to vibe out to. His most recent record, “Exclusive,” is guaranteed to make you bop!

If there is one thing Global Jay want’s his listeners to remember is that their grind should never stop. In the words of Jay himself, “Stay down till you come up and make sure you stay the same and don’t ever change on your gang!”
