Over the past few years, we have seen a multitude of international films break the barrier of the domestic film industry and go on to achieve critical acclaim. None of which have quite matched the success of Parasite however, South Korean director Bong-Joon Ho’s 2019 thriller that took an interesting look at class dynamics in South Korea and the inherent, albeit exaggerated, horrors that can come with them. Parasite would win the Palme D’or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival before then going on to also win four Academy Awards including Best Picture, making it the first non-English film to do so and cementing Parasite’s place in Hollywood history. It simultaneously made Joon-Ho, a dedicated writer who is constantly working on his next project, a hot commodity, and it looks like we may be getting closer to his next film: according to reports, Robert Pattinson is set to star in Bong Joon-Ho’s next project, with the film set to be a sci-fi adaptation of a novel that hasn’t even officially released yet but is already receiving rave reviews.
Many will best remember Pattinson for playing the moody vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight films, however it looks like this project will be taking him in a completely different direction. Joon-Ho’s next project is set to be an adaptation of a sci-fi novel Mickey7 written by Edward Ashton, based upon the story of a man living in a futuristic world where some humans have essentially become expendable and he himself is among that group. He is forced to fight tirelessly to conceal his identity in hopes of not meeting what was seemingly his predestined fate, and though it doesn’t officially release until February 15th, Mickey7 already has a 4.1 out of 5 rating on GoodReads. Now the incredibly creative ming of Bong Joon-Ho is set to adapt the film for his next highly anticipated project, and Robert Pattinson will star in said adaptation likely playing the aforementioned character. Further details about the project remain sparse, however it is certainly something for fans to keep an eye out for in the coming months.
As previously mentioned, Bong Joon-Ho is a workhorse when it comes to his craft and this adaptation is a prime example of that. Not only is he hard at work to bring a novel to life that hasn’t even hit shelves yet, he is also working alongside WarnerMedia on a limited series for HBO based upon Parasite that has fans frothing at the mouth already. It will certainly be interesting to see what comes next for the acclaimed director, and fans can stay on the lookout for further updates about any one of the many projects he may be working on right now.
