For years, Rod Wave has been the voice of heartbreak and hardship, and with his latest release, “Sinners,” he is delving into even deeper emotions. Released on Friday, April 4th, this powerful track serves as the lead single for an upcoming thriller that shares its name.
Similar to the film, the music video for “Sinners” takes place in the Jim Crow-era South during the 1930s, showcasing the Florida singer passionately delivering poignant lines such as
“Excuse me, master, I think you’re confused I was promised forty acres and mules.. Damn, I feel like a fool, forget the rules, what does the fine print say?”
Rod’s Emotional Journey
As Rod Wave embarks on his emotional journey, the video intricately incorporates scenes from the movie, featuring Michael B. Jordan in the dual role of twin brothers Smoke and Stack, alongside actor Woody McClain. Later in his solitary verse, Rod Wave alludes to the vampire motifs present in the film directed by Ryan Coogler, declaring:
“If he knew I was a slave to the state..Go tell him I ain’t afraid of ghosts, vampires, whips, and chains”.
As he drives through cotton fields in a classic Ford Model T, he expresses a sense of disconnection from the past; however, his music resonates powerfully with the enduring struggle to persevere during that tumultuous time
Sinners is set to premiere in theaters on April 18th, marking a significant return for Ryan Coogler to original storytelling after spending nearly a decade expanding the Black Panther and Creed franchises.
