As we work our way through 2021, a sense of normalcy begins to return to society as people go back to their everyday lives. In some places however, we are instead witnessing a huge spike in COVID-19 cases that could be indicative of what’s to come. One of those places is Australia, which has imposed strict health and safety protocols to help combat this surge. Some filmmakers have already grown accustomed to the inconvenience of COVID-19 and have learned to adapt: Russell Crowe is working on his latest film Poker Face in the country and has enlisted the help of Liam Hemsworth to star in the project.
Poker Face is set to be the story of a young tech billionaire who gets wrapped up in the world of high stakes poker. Crowe plans to appear in the work alongside Hemsworth, set to star as the tech billionaire in question, as well as actress Elsa Pataky and Wu-Tang Clan member RZA. The project will also mark Crowe’s second stint as director, with the first coming in 2014 with the film The Water Diviner. Lack of experience and COVID-19 restrictions aside, the Hollywood veteran is eager for the opportunity to direct and will navigate the situation with grace as lockdown restrictions are set to be lifted in Australia at the end of the summer.
It is somewhat difficult to make of this project given all the moving parts. Crowe may have his work cut out for him, however he seems as eager as ever for the challenge. Hemsworth is likely thrilled to be filming in his home country, and he is doing so with the support of his own family as he stars alongside his brother Chris’ wife, Ms. Pataky. Only time can tell, and we will have to wait and see how Crowe and company handle the pandemic in the upcoming production of Poker Face.
