Even though we have a standalone Black Widow film on the horizon, we’re still not over the heartbreaking death scene of Scarlett Johansson’s character in Avengers: Endgame.
We found out the death we saw in the Russo brothers’ was originally going to be quite different – with the alternate demise of Natasha Romanoff not as heroic as what landed in cinemas. Now Scarlett herself has shed some light on the reasons behind why Black Widow died the way she did. And, for this, we have the kids to thank.
Recalling how her character’s sacrificial demise was originally a chase scene featuring an ‘army of Dementor-type creatures’, she told sources ‘I was thinking, “Parents will never forgive us for how these creatures look”.’ Along with Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) the pair ended up reshooting the ending as the quieter, personal confrontation we came to experience.
Scarlett added ‘We wanted to leave [the audience] with the weight of that loss and the shock of it.’ What we came to know as Black Widow’s grim ending involved the pair fighting to sacrifice themselves in order to obtain the Soul Stone, jump back into the Quantum Realm and return to Avengers HQ to build the Infinity Gauntlet to snap back half the population dusted by Thanos.
In the alternate death, if you wanted to know the details, a fight between Hawkeye and Black Widow brews on Vormir as they try to acquire the Soul Stone, however, when Mad Titan Thanos’ forces arrive, things take a turn and the pair are pinned back from the edge by their enemies. Knowing what’s coming, Black Widow makes the first move and rushes towards the cliff edge to throw herself over and acquire the stone for the Infinity Gauntlet.
