Grind Mode is SGS the Movement‘s most fully-realized statement yet. In the 21-track album, the hip-hop collective maneuver between themes surrounding love, perseverance, and ascension. The album also highlights the group’s versatility and humble beginnings. Not only is the album’s experimental sound a welcome sign for the prodigious lyrical talents, but it also showcases the atmosphere SGS the Movement’s music has.
The album also highlights personal chronicles of how their hard work paid off. No matter the topic, the rappers tackle it precisely, making sure each bar shines through a melodic or pristine flow. Loaded with lyrics that inspire all walks of life, Grind Mode is an LP for their fans.
SGS the Movement started in 2017. The “SGS” stands for struggle grind shine: the three stages of life. The group’s overall lyrical concept is inspired by various events that occur in an everyday hip-hop subculture. They construct an R&B and hip-hop sound reminiscent of the music’s golden era. Similarly, SGS the Movement’s sound is a mesh of melodic rap and harmonies followed by captivating beats. Depending on the vibe of the beat, whether hip hop or R&B, the rap collective match the energy with melodic rap lyrics.
“As a group, our biggest challenge began to be collaboration and all being in the same place at the same time,” one of the members said. “Outside factors influence this lack of balance, and collaboration became less productive over time without everyone being on the same page. So, we are currently focusing on duo artistry.”
Ultimately, SGS the Movement hopes their fans leave knowing how different we are. Whether it’s negative or positive feedback, they want to be heard.
Grind Mode comes on the heels of their 2022 single “NJ to NY.”
