With the sad news of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s passing on Friday night at the age of 87, many stars took to social media to mourn the loss of the trailblazer’s life. The beloved Justice Ginsberg had become quite an internet sensation in recent years thanks to a 2013 Tumblr blog, Notorious R.B.G., dedicated to images and new articles on the late Justice.
Her life and career was depicted several times on screen after being made a hit on the internet. In 2018, drama On the Basis of Sex highlighted her early career from the time she started at Harvard Law to her famous court battles on gender discrimination as a lawyer. The same year saw Oscar-nominated documentary RBG featuring many interviews with Justice herself and several of her family members. RBG has also been played many times by Kate McKinnon on SNL.
Felicity Jones, who portrayed the Justice in On The Basis of Sex, made a statement to TODAY saying, “Ruth Bader Ginsburg gave us hope, a public figure who stood for integrity and justice- a responsibility she did not wear lightly. She will be missed not only as a beacon of light in these difficult times but for her razor sharp wit and extraordinary humanity. She taught us all so much. I will miss her deeply.”
Hillary Clinton, Rob Reiner, Kerry Washington, Robert Downey Jr., and more tweeted about Justice Ginsberg’s passing. Even more stars took to Instagram sharing inspirational quotes and fond memories with RBG as well.
Ginsberg was appointed to the court in 1993 by President Clinton. The ‘Notorious R.B.G.’, known for her powerful dissents and opinions, was a champion for equal rights. Brooklyn born and Columbia Law graduate, she paved the way for so many by arguing and ruling on many historic supreme court cases.
