Singer/songwriter Summer Walker is back with her Life on Earth EP, and it’s beyond what we could have hoped for. Just a day after her stellar BET Awards 2020 performance (“Session 32” and “Come Thru” with Usher), she announced that her brand new EP would drop today and as promised, it is here to fill our ears with a gamut of emotions.

Since Walker stepped on the scene nearly two years ago in 2018 she has consistently demonstrated her versatility as a vocalist and author. From Last Days of Summer, to Clear, up to her debut studio album Over It we have all experienced a rollercoaster of emotions along with her. Now, Life On Earth, which features assists from songwriter and producer No1-Noah (on “SWV” and “White Tee”) and Canadian artist and producer PartyNextDoor (“My Affection”), captures her as her most introspective, and sultry self. Backed by slow tempos, a dash of auto-tune, sensually rich melodies, and rather daring lyrics the Atlanta native does not hold back. We even get a glimpse of her sing-rapping on, “White Tee,” a dimension of Summer which we have never experienced.
Although the EP is only 16 minutes long, it’s more than enough time for her to do what she does best, which is supply the listener with sonic dope. From beginning to end this is a no skip album, and once you reach the last song I promise you will want to start it over. While she explores themes of heart break, disappointment, fear, and lack of trust she presents it in a seductive and enticing manner.
Moreover, while her lyricism is truly impressive, it all comes down to her gentle yet looming voice. Yes, Walker’s lyrics never feel redundant or forced, rather they offer a deeper insight into her real life experience, almost as if she’s one of your girls that offers a well of advice. But, her voice is truly what elevates every single track. It’s like a balm: healing and comforting.
The only comparison I can come up with when I listen to this album is honey, sweet and silky yet sticky enough to stay on the front of your mind after one listen.
