Surprised? Even being the least performing film of the sequal trilogy history, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker just passed $1 Billion on worldwide Box office. Making Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker the first of the decade, the fifth of the Star Wars movies, seventh Disney film of 2019 (not including Spider Man) , and the 46th movie of all time to make this money mark.
It’s a given to know that anything Star Wars is going to make money simply off the strength of the dedicated fan base that’s built on generational love. Which is exactly why the low number of opening night were socking and unexpected. The last Star Wars film, the Last Jedi was in 2107. Ending a story plot on a height of suspense, killing off Luke, leaving a story untold until nearly the end of 2 years 2015-2019, bringing on director Abrams, missing the beloved Princess Leia, concluding the saga, all to only bring in $177.4 million opening weekend. Compared to Abrams 2015’s The Force Awakens which bought in $247.9M and even 2017’s The Last Jedi $220M, this addition to the force was weaker than usual. But still, Star Wars found it’s rise with The Rise of Skywalker, bringing in $1 Billion+ worldwide.
The accomplishment of this films financial success is actually worth acknowledging considering the high and lows the film experienced from opening to now. The weekends between Opening weekend and this past weekend showed a 92% drop in revenue, picking back up a bit domestically this weekend, and then bringing it home with overseas Germany with $3.2 million, France $2.4 million , United Kingdom $2.4 million and Japan $3 million. By tuesday (mid week, not even the weekend) The Rise Of Skywalker grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Star Wars: The Rise of Walker being Disneys seventh billion dollar film of 2019, set a record for Disney in the industry as well. Congratulations tribe! The Force has risen, again!
