Scoop of the Day
SZA shows no signs of slowing down. Her immensely popular album, SOS, continues to dominate the Billboard 200, achieving its 12th nonconsecutive week at the top spot on the chart for January 11.
This renewed success comes after the release of the deluxe edition, titled SOS Deluxe: LANA, which introduced 15 additional tracks on December 20. Initially released on December 9, 2022, as a comprehensive 23-track album, SOS had already spent 10 weeks at number one during late 2022 and early 2023. Billboard consolidates all versions of the album for tracking purposes, contributing to its impressive chart performance.
SOS population ✨
For the week ending January 2, SOS accumulated 130,000 equivalent album units in the United States, reflecting a 27% decrease from the previous week, as reported by Luminate. A significant portion of this total stemmed from streaming, which generated an impressive 166.31 million on-demand streams. The album continues to hold its position at the top of the Top Streaming Albums chart.
With an impressive 12 weeks at number one, SOS has secured the longest duration for an R&B or R&B/hip-hop album by a female artist since Whitney Houston’s self-titled debut, which held the top spot for 14 weeks back in 1986. The last R&B/hip-hop album to achieve at least 12 weeks at number one was Drake’s Views, which enjoyed 13 nonconsecutive weeks at the peak in 2016.
Artistry of your choice from popular streaming artists
In the past week, holiday-themed releases had a strong presence in both the top 10 and much of the top 100 chart. However, now albums from well-known artists are beginning to take back their positions, even though there’s been a slight decline in activity compared to the previous week. Kendrick Lamar’s GNX, which once held the number one spot, has risen to number two, racking up 70,000 units. Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet has made a notable jump to number three, with 56,000 units sold. Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department has experienced a drop, falling to number six with 44,000 units, while Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess ascends to number seven with 41,000 units.
SZA debut of her music career
During the weekend, SZA revealed that she has two albums remaining under her contract with TDE. She expressed her intention to focus on producing two children’s albums for these final projects.
