Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon was released on March 5th opening in over 1,000 theaters. Most theaters are still limited to 25% capacity seating. This movie was only the 5th film to open in that many theaters since the start of lockdown, due to the Pandemic.
This movie depicted the Asian culture in a beautiful way, telling the story of Raya’s journey. The lone warrior, Raya goes on a journey to save the world and restore peace by tracking down the last dragon. As with most Disney films, there is always an underlining lesson to be learned. Raya learns that it will take more than magic to conquer this quest, it will take trust!
The weekend box office results showed the movie as bringing in only $8.6 million which was less than expected. The movie underperformed compared to Warner Brothers, Tom & Jerry that opened at $14.1 million. Although coming in low at the box office, the numbers provide great hope that as theaters slowly open back up, box office number will rise the same!
