Variety reports that The CW is developing a live-action sequel series to the iconic female superhero cartoon, The Powerpuff Girls. This news comes about after the show tried for a reboot on Cartoon Network over a year ago.
The new series explores Blossom’s, Buttercup’s, and Bubbles‘ life in their 20’s. The plot centers on their resentment for spending their entire childhood fighting crime, and now they struggle to reunite as the world needs them more than ever.
The Powerpuff Girls is written and executive produced by Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody.
The original series was created by Craig McCracken and debuted in 1998. It focused on Professor Utonium, who attempted to make the perfect little girl from sugar, spice, everything nice, and the mysterious Chemical X. In turn, he ended up creating the powerful trio Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup.
Throughout its six-season run, the series received rave reviews and was broken up with a theatrical movie in 2002, which was a modest critical and commercial success.
