Back in 2013 Universal Studios released a film that many would have never guessed would result in the birth of an entire franchise, however eight years and four films later that is exactly what happened. That film was The Purge, a dystopian horror film that explores what would happen if one night of the year all laws ceased to apply and humans were allowed to indulge in their darkest urges. The resulting events highlight the evil that exists in humanity and how fast society could potentially spiral out of control if lawlessness became the rule of the land, and it did so quite successfully. Despite receiving mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, The Purge would end up turning a $3 million budget into nearly $90 million in box office receipts and establishing itself as the beginning of an incredibly successful franchise. Now Universal will be bringing an end to the franchise with the upcoming release of its fifth installment, The Forever Purge, and they’ve gifted eager fans with the first official trailer.
Though the 2013 film was seemingly a standalone project when it was released, Universal opted to take a shot at expanding upon the story of what would happen if traditional laws were abandoned and humans must fend for themselves. The upcoming fifth installment seemingly explores this idea deeper than any of the previous films in contemplating what would happen if this “purge” were to become permanent. As is obvious based upon the trailer, absolute chaos ensues and survival of the fittest reigns supreme as individuals from all walks of life are forced to defend their livelihood. This film certainly is not for the faint of heart and you may want to avoid the trailer if blood makes you squeamish; if not, then you’re in for a treat. Josh Lucas and Ana de la Reguera are set to star in the film and its release is currently scheduled for July 2nd.
As we ease out of quarantine and everyday life begins to return to a sense of normalcy, movie goers are bound to be overflowing with excitement as films begin releasing in theaters again. Countless films were forced to delay their release in the wake of COVID-19 and The Forever Purge was among those films, forced to delay its release a full year in hopes of reaching the silver screen. Subsequently Universal Studios is probably more than eager than fans to get back to theaters and recover any revenue they lost since the beginning of last year, and given how successful The Purge franchise has been this is a great opportunity to do so. Excited fans can mark off July 2nd on their calendars and start counting down the days until the release of The Forever Purge.
