As anybody who watches movies knows, the superhero film genre has seen something akin to a modern day renaissance over the course of the past decade. Marvel reenergized the genre in 2008 with the release of the first Iron Man film and never looked back, building out the entire Avengers franchise including independent films for each individual superhero. This subsequently inspired a diverse array of superhero films that have made the genre arguably the most successful on Earth, and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. The latest superhero project that is set to debut will center around the female version of one of the most iconic superheroes in Batgirl, and the production team has been hard at work rounding out its cast this week.
The same year that Marvel decided to reboot the Iron Man franchise, Christopher Nolan also rebooted the Batman franchise with the release of The Dark Knight. That franchise was a massive success and played an integral role in reshaping the superhero genre in recent years, and now Batman’s female equivalent will be getting her opportunity to shine. Batgirl is currently in the infantile stages of production at Warner Brothers set to follow the story of Barbara Gordon, the police commissioner of Gotham City and home to Batman, who is inspired to follow in the iconic hero’s footsteps. Further plot details about the project have yet to emerge, however we do know who is set to play the villain in the upcoming Batgirl film: Warner Brothers has cast Brendan Fraser, best known for his work on films like George of the Jungle, to appear opposite Leslie Grace who has been cast as the titular hero. No exact release date has been announced for the project yet, however it is expected to debut on HBO Max in 2022.
While superhero films have been on the rise for over a decade now, female-led superhero films have been especially interesting in recent years. Whether it be Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, female superheroes have been garnering substantial attention as well as box office receipts. Now another is set to be added to the mix in Batgirl, however who will fulfill that role is yet to be seen. Superhero film-fanatics will just have to keep an eye out as further details emerge about Batgirl in the near future.
