Every year Americans celebrate a myriad of holidays with various meanings behind them whether they be religious, political or what have you. One holiday in particular though seems to fall well outside of that scope though and is celebrated in a rather unique way when it rolls around every October: Halloween. While it doesn’t hold the implications of a holiday like Christmas, Halloween is revered in its own right for allowing those who celebrate it to take pleasure in the occult and mysterious in a way that would typically be regarded as odd at any other point throughout the year. As a result, a myriad of television series and films have been produced over the years in the spirit of the holiday that allow fans to relish in the excitement of Halloween from the comfort of their own homes and have only further ingrained the holiday into the DNA of American culture. Now one new project is set to provide fans with another unique perspective on Halloween with Warner Media set to produce a film about the seasonal chain store Spirit Halloween and what happens when a group of friends decide to use the store as the setting for their holiday celebrations.
Even if you aren’t a fan of Halloween, you’re probably familiar with Spirit Halloween. Every October they set up shop in storefronts across the country and serve to fulfill the demands of customers eager to bask in the ominous feeling that Halloween precipitates, selling a myriad of decorations, costumers and anything else you may need to celebrate Halloween. Now Spirit Halloween is ready to take things up a notch though, teaming up with Strike Back Studios and Hideout Pictures to produce a new film aptly titled after the store at the center of the story Spirit Halloween which will take a classic horror trope we all know and love and utilize the Spirit Halloween storefront in exploring that trope. In Spirit Halloween, a group of middle-schoolers elect to forgo trick-or-treating and instead decide to spend their Halloween locked inside the store from which the film gets its name only to realize rather quickly that they bit off more than they can chew as the store is possessed by an evil and ominous spirit. That evil spirit is said to shift its focus to the middle-schoolers in question in hopes of possessing them next, providing them with a Halloween they certainly will not forget anytime soon. Spirit Halloween has already wrapped production and is aiming for an October 2022 release date just in time for everybody’s favorite spooky holiday.
Whether you love or hate Halloween, it is virtually impossible to ignore the impact it has had on popular culture in recent decades. As the horror genre has expanded and society has become more accepting of the dark and outlandish things this world has to offer, Halloween has cemented its place in American culture as we know it. Spirit Halloween serves as a prime example of that, whether you’re talking about the actual store or the upcoming film, and moviegoers should be in for a treat this Halloween when the budding project ultimately premiers.
