Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande lead a futuristic, “Dance Dance Revolution” themed party in the video for their latest single “Rain On Me,” from Gaga’s upcoming album Chromatica.
Both the song and visual feel like a 90s club hit. From the reverb filled vocals, down to the tight choreography, this single is reminiscent of all things that simply feel good. Amongst the 3D rain droplets, and rich vocal cadences, there is a valuable message to walk away with here. As we watch Gaga pulling a dagger out of her leg she also sings, “I’d rather be dry but at least I’m alive, rain on me,” which can be interpreted in countless ways. However, I believe this to mean that although we all go through some very difficult moments, we are still standing and ready for whatever may come next. So, bring the rain because like Gaga we will not stay down!
The music video, directed by Robert Rodriguez, follows the same cyberpunk-anime aesthetic that Gaga has revealed for the Chromatica album. Dressed in pink, the pop star leads an army of dancers inside of a giant arena, with Ariana’s lavender-hued squad on the flipside of the video, ultimately serving us some major parallel universe vibes. Grande, who is depicted sporting a pair of chrome butterfly wings, serves as a juxtaposition to Gaga’s powerhouse pop vocals and warrior-princess costume. Both visually and vocally the two form the greatest mega-pop duo of all time. Towards the end, she and Ari are shown holding hands, each with lengthy Sailor Moon hair floating in the wind behind them, concluding the video in a rather poetic manner.
Chromatica was originally due out April 10th but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The album will now be out Friday, May 29th. “Rain on Me” follows the release of LP’s lead single, “Stupid Love,” released in February. In addition to Grande, the 16-song Chromatica will also feature contributions from Elton John and South Korean group Blackpink.
