The Billboard Hot 100 Charts, especially for top singles, are constantly changing. One new hit may just be released and immediately go viral and reach the top of the charts within just a few months of the release. Another song may suddenly gain traction through a popular music video or an entertaining video on social media, a very common way for newer hits to rapidly get recognized nationally and internationally en masse.
Recently, one song that has quickly risen to fame is Harry Styles’ new hit “Watermelon Sugar”, which was just released in November 2019. The song’s catchy chorus appealed to many, and plenty of music fans enjoyed watching the tropical party and girls themed music video as well. People were more than happy to download and stream the song as critics were impressed with Harry Styles’ vocals. The song quickly made it onto the top 10 charts not only in the US, but in 20 other countries, such as the UK, Australia, and Canada. In the US, for awhile the song had placed at an already impressive #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. However, just on today’s US chart, “Watermelon Sugar” surged from #7 to #1. Yes, it is now Billboard’s most popular single in the US music industry. This is a groundbreaking moment for the former One Direction now longtime solo pop singer. It is his second single from his newest album, Fine Line, and it is his first ever single to make it to #1 on the US charts. This was accomplished in part due to multiple songs of his being released recently after another and reaching over 1 million streams, and also due to the song being played very frequently on the radio, which made even infrequent or more casual music listeners catch on to the hype of this exciting song. Another significant reason for this success is that the album to which the song belongs to, Fine Line, has already generated substantial attention in the US, as there were 63,000 digital sales of the album. In addition to “Watermelon Sugar”, another new song to make its mark and thrive on the charts is Billie Eilish’s release “My Future”, which has been recognized by Billboard for being a “Hot Shot Debut” after just being released on July 30, 2020. It is already at an astonishing #6 on the Hot 100 Singles chart. Lastly, some more popular hits on the top of the US chart are “Rockstar” with Da Baby and Roddy Rich, “Whats Poppin” by Jack Harlow featuring Da Baby, Tory Lanez, and Lil Wayne, and the well known “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, in numbers 2-4 respectively.
