A Despicable Me 5 could happen, but the filmmakers say they won’t make another movie until they find the right story.
While promoting Minions & Monsters, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri explained that the team is always talking about a fifth Despicable Me movie. However, they haven’t come up with a story that excites them enough to move forward.
Steve Carell, who voices Gru, also thinks Gru Jr. could lead the next movie. He even joked that it could follow the character during his rebellious teenage years.
Director Chris Renaud has said something similar in the past, explaining that the franchise will only continue if they can tell a fresh story. One idea that has been mentioned is making Gru Jr. the main focus after his introduction in Despicable Me 4.
For now, though, Despicable Me 5 has not been officially confirmed.
In the meantime, Minions & Monsters is now playing in theaters. The movie follows the Minions as they become Hollywood stars, accidentally unleash monsters on the world, and then try to fix the mess they created.
