Just a few days ago, the Grammy award winning icon Sam Smith released their newest, quite literally groundbreaking new hit, “Diamonds”. Not only is the song beautiful with important lyrics teaching a lesson about an unhealthy kind of relationship, but the music video is also beautiful and iconic in its own way.
I say groundbreaking because the video starts out shocking viewers with an introduction of pure, strong, unrelenting lightning and thunder. This sets a darker and sadder tone for the song, but at the same time it leaves the viewers in anticipation of what is to come. Then the camera pans to Sam Smith in their house or apartment, as they perform a solo free, relaxed interpretive dance. This is especially symbolic. The lyrics and the theme of the song represent an unhealthy materially based love, in which the emphasis on greed and fancy gifts superseded the partner’s appreciation of who the protagonist really is and their true real feelings. In addition to Smith’s lyrics calling the partner cruel, the free form solo dance represents the protagonist breaking free from the inauthenticity that they discovered in their partner, and being happier single and at peace rather than in a toxic relationship. The main line of the chorus, “My diamonds leave with you” further nails that point down, that they are even willing to give up the material gifts just because they were part of that kind of relationship with a partner that cared the most about these greedy wishes. This teaches a lesson to many viewers about breaking free from relationships in which true love is not reciprocated and the relationship isn’t right. The beautiful and inspiring, yet upbeat new hit is available on Spotify and all platforms! In addition, with the release of this song, Smith announced the upcoming release of their newest album, “Love Goes”, on October 30th! The title clearly implies more songs about relationships, and we are so excited for the whole collection of songs like these to come!
