Queen & Slim star, Jodie Turner-Smith, played one of the main roles in Without Remorse, which was released this past Friday, April 30. The film was released exclusively through Amazon Prime video after being acquired from Paramount Pictures. Turner-Smith played the role of a woman US Navy Seal, Lieutenant Commander, Karen Greer along side Co-Producer/Co-Star, Michael B. Jordan (John Clark.)
Turner-Smith recently revealed in interviews with Variety & People Magazine that training and filming for the role was, “Complex.” “I don’t know if you know this, but when you are pregnant, it’s very hard to hold your breath,” the star said when opening up about a few difficulties experienced when training for the film. Yes! Turner-Smith opened up revealing the fact that she was in her second trimester when training for Without Remorse.
Turner-Smith certainly stood up for all women by taking on the role of playing a female Navy Seal. To date, there are no women in the US Navy Seal’s and the job was not open to women because of the physical/mental demands until 2016. Imagine the physical demands that Turner-Smith willingly placed on her body while pregnant during the, “Boot-camp style” training required for filming. Turner-Smith spoke on the most difficult moment for her which was having to hold her breath for an underwater scene. Turner-Smith said,
“Training wasn’t straightforward because I was pregnant, so that definitely added a layer of complexity to it. But I went after it. I gave it all of myself.”
Turner-Smith welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world with her husband, actor Joshua Jackson, in April 2020. I’m sure this role will make their daughter proud when she hears about the strength her mother displayed in playing this role. Until then, we can all be proud of how Turner-Smith stood up for all women, which was exactly what she intended to do. In an interview with Variety she stated,
“There’s not a female Navy SEAL right now, but there will be soon. I feel that is what we’re moving towards. It felt very cool to embody this a little bit ahead of the curve … And to hopefully honor and bring a good representation to women around the world who are serving in the armed forces right now.”
