Even as someone who has never been into comic books, I understand the significance of comic-con for comic book fans around the world. Comic-con is an annual event where the biggest comic book fanatics from around the globe congregate at the San Diego Convention Center to experience some of the magic in real life. Last year’s Comic-Con was sadly cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of literally countless events around the globe, and the fervent fans have subsequently been without Comic-Con for nearly two years. That is about to change though: Comic-Con@Home 2021 is set to begin in a few weeks, taking place digitally this year to accommodate fans as we continue to ease out of the pandemic. A number of panels are sure to pique your interest even if you aren’t a comic book fan, though some will be disappointed to hear that Marvel and DC Films opted out of Comic-Con@Home and will not be present this year.
While most people may be turned off at the idea of Comic-Con, the panels they host are sure to catch your eye even if you are a comic book critic. For instance: legendary cartoon show The Simpsons has a panel, featuring “animators, writers and special surprise guests” that will “answer your questions, tell behind-the-scenes stories, and reveal the secrets of the Springfield Cinematic Universe!” If the yellow folk from Springfield aren’t your cup of tea then maybe the quirky family from Bob’s Burgers is, with the “cast and producers of the Emmy Award-winning animated FOX series…showing never-before-seen footage and answering questions from a few lucky fans.” If animation just isn’t your thing altogether, maybe one of the three Walking Dead panels featuring countless members from the original cast you will. Comic-Con@Home has a little bit of something for everyone, though superhero fanatics may feel left out this year as Marvel and DC Films have decided to not host any panels this year. Warner Brothers will also be limiting their involvement, though they do plan to host a panel for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
On top of what has already been mentioned, Comic-Con@Home’s range of panels are sure to catch your eye at least once. Family Guy, Doctor Who and The Mysterious Benedict Society? No matter the genre or style of show, Comic-Con is happy to open their doors to any talented creatives just proving that Comic-Con isn’t just for comic book lovers. For anyone who may be interested, maybe Comic-Con@Home is the perfect opportunity to test the waters! Comic-Con@Home will take place from July 23rd to July 25th, just over 2 weeks away.
