To most, it feels like we have been living in something reminiscent of an apocalyptic society thanks to COVID-19. With businesses shut down and quarantine mandates in effect, civilization as we know it has been seemingly on the verge of crumbling for nearly two whole years. While things are certainly beginning to improve, slowly, the last impacts of COVID-19 are likely to be felt for years to come. The societal impacts are likely to be the subject of debate and exploration, and a new film is seemingly going to be the first to touch upon that: The Survivalist starring John Malkovich follows the actor as he fights for survival in a post-apocalyptic world, and the first official trailer for the film is available for eager fans.
Malkovich is the definition of a Hollywood veteran, beginning his career as an actor back in 1978. Since then, he has played a myriad of roles from Biff Loman in the 1985 film adaptation of Death of a Salesman to the rugged Russian mobster Teddy KGB in the 1998 movie Rounders. Now, he will be playing a man who is faced with the aftermath of a global pandemic that has virtually wiped out society in its entirety. In The Survivalist, Malkovich plays a gang leader in pursuit of a young woman, set to be played by Ruby Modine, who has developed an immunity to the virus that wiped out society essentially in hopes of rebuilding civilization. The official trailer for The Survivalist can be seen below, and the project can be seen in theaters or on streaming services starting October 1st.
The Survivalist seemingly couldn’t have come at a better time. As we begin to ease our way out of our own pandemic, Malkovich and company are here to remind us what could have been. This will likely be the first of many projects to explore the topic in the coming future, and will be made available to moviegoers beginning this October.
