Over the past year, movie studios have been forced to get creative with their distribution as the COVID-19 has raged on. With movie theaters shut down throughout the majority of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, many studios and production companies turned towards streaming platforms to distribute new movies and television series. This was the case with Wonder Woman 1984 last winter when the film released through HBO Max as theaters remained closed throughout the holidays. While this was not what anybody had envisioned, it was the best option during a rather hectic time for the film industry as well as the entire globe. Now it looks as though the team behind the franchise will get their shot at redemption with the third title in the Wonder Woman franchise currently in production, and details are beginning to slowly emerge regarding the upcoming project.
Starring the incredibly talented Gal Gadot as the titular superhero, the Wonder Woman franchise was originally rebooted in 2017 and saw massive success immediately. This was followed up by the aforementioned Wonder Woman 1984 at the end of last year, and now Gadot and company will be looking to complete the trilogy with a third installment in the Wonder Woman franchise. It has been confirmed that Gadot and director Patty Jenkings, however other casting decisions remain under lock and key along with the potential release date. What we do know is that the upcoming third installment will bring Wonder Woman into the modern era, in stark contrast to the first two films which were period pieces, and potentially align with the character’s story in the Justice League franchise. Aside from that, fans will have to eagerly await further updates regarding the next Wonder Woman film in the coming weeks.
Historically, the world of superheroes has typically been a space dominated by men. In recent years that has certainly changed however with super-heroines finally getting the opportunity to shine. Gadot is not alone in this either, with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow releasing earlier this year both in theaters and on Disney+. Now fans of these heroes have another project to look forward to as they anticipate further updates about the next installment of Wonder Woman.
