Though they are typically associated with children, we have come to learn over the past few decades that cartoons can be made for adults just as well. The crude humor presented in franchises such as South Park and Family Guy would go right over the vast majority of children’s heads, often taking a unique stance on a myriad of touchy subjects while remaining wholly relatable for the average adult. More and more animated series like the aforementioned are popping up on television networks and streaming platforms far and wide, however one company is going back into its archives for their latest project. It was announced earlier this week that the iconic animated duo Beavis and Butt-Head are set to make a return in the near future, with a new film poised to debut on the streaming platform Paramount+ that shows us the titular characters in a new form.
Originally debuting on MTV in 1992, Beavis and Butthead could be considered a satirical comedy as it captured the inane pair of teenagers who would quickly become notorious amongst fans for their sense of humor that was equally childish as it was hilarious. The duo would get into anything you could possibly imagine a teenage boy in the 1990’s doing and would take it to the furthest extremes, often ending poorly and resulting in some way that is so surreal you can’t help but laugh. They would go on to star in their first movie Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996 and would see considerable box office success, cementing their place in Hollywood history for decades to come. Now that some time has passed however, it appears that series creator Mike Judge has plans to revive the iconic characters when he tweeted about plans for a new Beavis and Butt-Head movie currently in the works. As if that isn’t enough, his tweet came with pictures attached and Judge adding that they will “need some time to get back in shape” as they have aged considerably, highlighting a potential twist that could be huge for diehard fans of Beavis and Butt-Head that have essentially grown up alongside the pair. While no release date has been announced yet, fans have plenty of time to get prepared and get subscribed to Paramount+ if they aren’t already.
While Beavis and Butt-Head may not be for everybody, their place in Hollywood history is indisputable. MTV was a force to be reckoned with in the 1990’s and the animated duo are integral to their DNA during said time period, and as nostalgia for the 90’s grows they have seemingly found their place in society once again. It will be intriguing to see what Judge comes up with to make up for lost time, and die hard fans and Paramount+ subscribers can remain on the lookout for further updates about the new Beavis and Butt-Head film in the coming weeks.
