In the year 2022, superhero projects have become as commonplace as virtually anything else in Hollywood. Marvel virtually redefined the genre beginning back in 2008 when they elected to reboot the Iron Man franchise with Robert Downey Jr. at its helm, and since then virtually every production studio has elected to follow suit. An array of new superhero series and films are released annually now which tell the stories of superheroes both new and old, with some becoming full-on franchises in their own right. Now one of those franchises is ready to release its next installment in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with the latest trailer for the project hinting at a promising easter egg for fans.
The initial Doctor Strange film starring Benedict Cumberbatch was released six years ago in 2016 and was an immediate hit amongst fans. The abstract superhero resonated with fans right away and has made consistent appearances in several Marvel projects over the past few years that have only further cemented his place in the MCU, but now he is ready for a sequel. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is right around the corner, and this week Marvel released the latest trailer for the project which hints at something pretty substantial for fans. Though only 30 seconds long, the trailer is certainly packed full of action that is sure to have fans elated, but also includes a reference to the “Illuminati,” a secret alliance of incredibly powerful superheroes, that could have substantial implications for both the franchise as well as the MCU. This is the first mention of them since the MCU has found its footing over the past decade so it’s completely impossible to predict what Kevin Feige and company have in store for fans, but they can find out for themselves when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres on May 6th.
Superhero films have become an integral part of Hollywood’s DNA at this point, and Doctor Strange has become one of the genre’s best representatives. Cumberbatch was incredibly patient in waiting for his chance to star in the sequel to the original 2016 film Doctor Strange, and now it appears that patience is going to pay off in droves for fans. We will just have to find out for ourselves in less than 2 weeks when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters.
