Every year, a myriad of films are released by big budget production companies that see varying levels of success. Some are relatively meager attempts at creating something special while others are full fledged projects with so many moving parts that they become hard to keep track of, with each yielding varying levels of success. Sometimes those meager attempts resonate with audiences better than the more intricate projects, while others simply fall flat in comparison as their competition is too mighty to even contest with. That is more than likely going to be the case with The Covenant, Guy Ritchie’s new action-thriller that sees Jake Gyllenhaal playing an army sergeant who puts everything on the line when forced into combat, and we have the official first look at the impending project set to hit theaters later this month.
Guy Ritchie and Jake Gyllenhall are film industry veterans at this point, and them teaming up is already likely an indicator of something special. From the looks of it, The Covenant is exactly that as it sees Gyllenhaal in a role unlike any he has ever played before in which he seems to give it his absolute all. In this official first look though, reposted below, we see commentary from Gyllenhaal himself in which he instead shines the light upon his co-star Dar Salim who plays an Afghani interpreter who is hellbent on avenging the death of his son who lost his life at the hands of the Taliban and is an invaluable asset to Gyllenhaal along their journey for justice. While it may be a film rooted in the plight of the military and armed forces who protect our country, The Covenant is also a film about personal triumph and sacrifice in which very different men are able to unite under the same cause in pursuit of shared as well as individual goals that embodies what a life of servitude in the armed forces necessitates to be successful. Not enough can be said about what these two characters go through and the bond they forge through their pursuit of these goals however, and you’re probably better off making sure you catch The Covenant when it debuts in theaters on April 21st.
Jake Gyllenhaal has played a myriad of roles throughout his career, but this may be amongst the most unique given his resume. Fans of the actor likely didn’t see him starring as a military sergeant in his near future, but from the looks of it he delivered as high a caliber of a performance as he ever has in his career in The Covenant. The story at the core of the film is uniquely special though, and probably something that resonated with the actor on a deeper level that he couldn’t turn down. Eager fans can look forward to seeing the esteemed Gyllenhaal in Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant when it premieres in theaters in a few short weeks.
