2026 has been a huge year for movie theaters so far. The first few months of the year had the best box office numbers since before the pandemic, with movies making $1.77 billion worldwide in the first quarter alone. Popular movies like Project Hail Mary and Michael have performed really well, earning $638 million and $430 million worldwide, respectively. But one movie has made even more money than both of them.
Released on April 1 in the U.S., The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has already earned a whopping $900 million worldwide. The movie stars Chris Pratt, Brie Larson, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie was expected to be a big hit. Even though it may not match the first movie’s $1.36 billion total, it still had the biggest worldwide opening weekend of 2026. The movie is expected to pass $1 billion by the end of May, though it will soon face competition from upcoming movies like Mortal Kombat II and The Mandalorian & Grogu. Even with those movies coming out, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still expected to finish with over $1 billion worldwide, which could lead to a third movie in the series.
