Pixar Hit Sets Disney+ Premiere After Billion-Dollar Box Office Run
The toys are officially trading the big screen for the living room. After taking audiences on another emotional trip to infinity and beyond, Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is officially making its way to Disney+.
The latest chapter in one of animation’s most beloved franchises will begin streaming on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2026, giving fans the opportunity to revisit Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang from the comfort of home.
Directed by Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 arrived in theaters June 19 and quickly proved that audiences were still more than ready to play. And judging by the numbers, the nostalgia is very much alive.
From The Toy Box To The Billion-Dollar Club
Toy Story 5 didn’t just continue Pixar’s legendary franchise. In fact, it became a major box-office powerhouse. Following its June theatrical debut, the film generated approximately $1.129 billion worldwide, making it one of the biggest movies of 2026.
Its global opening weekend brought in $310.2 million, marking the biggest worldwide debut in the history of both the Toy Story franchise and Pixar. Not bad for a group of toys dealing with a tablet.
The film also became the third-highest-grossing movie of 2026 and landed among the 10 highest-grossing animated films of all time. Now, after conquering theaters, the toys are getting ready for their next destination. Your living room.
The Toys Have A New Problem
Set two years after the events of Toy Story 4, Toy Story 5 reunites audiences with Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the familiar toys now living under the care of eight-year-old Bonnie. But their latest adventure isn’t about a lost toy or a road trip. This time, they’re dealing with something that feels a little more familiar to modern families: technology.
Bonnie’s attention is captured by Lilypad, a tablet that quickly becomes her new favorite plaything. For the toys, that’s a problem. Because what happens when the thing that’s supposed to bring joy starts competing with the toys that have been there all along?
That question gives Toy Story 5 a surprisingly modern conflict while staying true to one of the franchise’s oldest themes: growing up and learning how to adapt when the world around you changes.
The Original Voices Are Back
One of the biggest reasons the Toy Story franchise continues to feel like Toy Story is the familiar voices behind its iconic characters. Tom Hanks returns as Woody, with Tim Allen once again voicing Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack returning as Jessie. The returning cast also includes Keanu Reeves, Bonnie Hunt, Annie Potts and Tony Hale, among others.
The new ensemble features Conan O’Brien, Greta Lee, Scarlett Spears, Shelby Rabara, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Craig Robinson and Alan Cumming. And with Stanton at the helm, the film also carries a particularly strong connection to the franchise’s history. Stanton has been involved with Toy Story since the beginning, having written all five installments.
Could There Be More Toy Story Ahead?
Here’s where things get particularly interesting. While Pixar has not officially announced another trilogy, Stanton has already hinted that the story could continue.
The filmmaker previously described the first three movies as the “Andy years” and discussed the possibility of another trilogy centered around Bonnie. That doesn’t necessarily mean Toy Story 6 is officially on the way… but it certainly leaves the door open.
And honestly, after five movies, more than three decades of history and another billion-dollar box-office performance, it’s difficult to argue that audiences have stopped caring about these characters.
The real challenge will always be finding a story worth telling. Toy Story has never been simply about toys. It’s about friendship, change, and letting go. And somehow, Pixar keeps finding new ways to make those lessons hit differently depending on where we are in life.
