With returning fan favorites, familiar faces inhabiting some of the franchise’s most recognizable characters, and an ominous new threat powerful enough to unite them all, Season 13 is shaping up to be the closest AHS has come to creating its own cinematic universe. And if creator Ryan Murphy‘s comparison to The Avengers is any indication, audiences should prepare for the ultimate supernatural team-up.
Welcome To The Greatest Show On Earth
Clocking in at 131 seconds, the first official trailer wastes little time establishing that American Horror Story: 13 is playing by an entirely different set of rules.
The trailer opens with Jessica Lange’s Elsa Mars from Freak Show welcoming viewers to the “greatest show on Earth” before the tone quickly shifts from spectacle to impending doom. Evan Peters‘ James March—his serial-killer character from Hotel—delivers another chilling warning: “It’s witch-hunting season“. From there, the pieces of the AHS universe begin falling into place.
Sarah Paulson‘s Cordelia Goode from Coven appears visibly terrified as she senses something wicked approaching the witches. Elsewhere, John Waters‘ mysterious Mr. Phibes declares that “13 stands for instability, chaos,” seemingly offering the first major clue to the season’s larger mythology.
Then comes the moment longtime fans have been waiting for: the montage. Twisty the Clown. Rubber Man. Marie Laveau. Madison Montgomery. Kai Anderson. Characters from Murder House, Coven, Freak Show, Cult and beyond are suddenly occupying the same terrifying world. The question is no longer whether these characters will return. It’s why they have been brought back.

Perhaps the most significant return belongs to Jessica Lange. Lange returns to her role as Constance Langdon from Murder House, marking her first appearance in the franchise since 2018. But her involvement reportedly goes even deeper this time around: she is set to portray all four of her most iconic American Horror Story characters throughout the new season.
For a series built around reinvention, Lange’s return carries an added sense of history. Constance Langdon helped establish the dark, theatrical DNA of American Horror Story from the beginning. Elsa Mars brought that same commanding presence into the twisted world of Freak Show. Now, those characters—and Lange’s legacy within the franchise—are being folded into a season that appears determined to make the anthology’s past part of its present. It is not simply nostalgia. It is mythology.
John Waters Enters The AHS Universe
The season also introduces an unexpected new face to the American Horror Story world: filmmaker and provocateur John Waters. Waters makes his AHS debut as Mr. Phibes, a character whose introduction in the trailer is anything but subtle. Covered in blood, dressed in a white suit and holding a knife, the filmmaker immediately looks at home inside Murphy’s universe of beautiful chaos and disturbing personalities.
His presence adds another layer of theatrical unpredictability to a season already overflowing with familiar faces. Newcomers Joey Pollari and Paul Anthony Kelly also join the cast, adding fresh energy to an ensemble constructed around both legacy and discovery.
When The AHS Anthology Becomes A Universe
For years, American Horror Story has operated as an anthology. Different stories, different eras, different characters, and occasionally surprising connections between them. American Horror Story: 13 appears ready to take those connections to their logical extreme.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Ryan Murphy described the new season as something larger than a traditional standalone story, comparing its crossover ambitions to The Avengers. According to Murphy, the characters ultimately come together to defeat an “ultimate evil.” That concept changes the stakes considerably.
What happens when characters who have survived ghosts, serial killers, witches, cults, demons and supernatural forces are forced to confront something powerful enough to bring them together? More importantly, what happens when some of the most dangerous people in the AHS universe are suddenly on the same side? The answer may be the most chaotic chapter in the franchise yet.
Thirteen Episodes. Half An Hour. One Ultimate Evil.
Unlike the sprawling hour-long structure often associated with prestige television, American Horror Story: 13 will consist of 13 half-hour episodes, creating a faster, more concentrated format for the franchise’s latest nightmare.
That structure could prove particularly fitting for a season built around so many characters and storylines. Rather than lingering in one isolated corner of the AHS universe, the shortened episodes may allow the series to move rapidly between characters, locations, mysteries and revelations.
And with a number as symbolically loaded as 13 sitting directly in the title, instability seems to be the point. The trailer certainly makes that clear.
The Past Has Returned. Something Worse Is Coming.
The greatest strength of American Horror Story has always been its ability to reinvent itself without completely abandoning what came before. Season 13 appears to reverse that formula. This time, the past isn’t simply influencing the story. The past is the story.
